In case you haven’t noticed, the “boho chic” of bohemian style is everywhere in fashion and interior design. We saw the revival of unfettered lines in the mid-century modern aesthetic of the ‘60s and ‘70s, so it’s only fitting that the carefree spirit of the bohemian lifestyle now joins the party.

This look draws inspiration from the world traveler. By combining East and West, vintage with modern, it displays an eclectic and cultivated blend of patterns and textures. A relaxed style, it’s punctuated by fringed throw pillows and macramé works, potted plants, and a hint of the Orient. The result can impart the feeling of an everlasting vacation – a bit rumpled and very, very at ease. The chic comes in with a simple backdrop upon which the layers of texture can pop, while a curated collection of accessories dials down the rumple and ups the style.

This bohemian project was right in my wheelhouse stylistically and also played to my everlasting love of black and white. My young client wanted a little boho chic and I wanted to keep the colors to a minimum. The rug and pillows were my starting point, both very textural and both handcreated with strong patterns.

Keeping the walls bright and white combined with a simple bed and simple curtains allow those strong pieces to stand on their own. The texture is amped up when you throw in bamboo blinds and woven sconces. Mixing furniture styles makes the room feel collected, a hallmark of the bohemian style. A little vintage side chest with a tall graphic bookcase and a low upholstered platform bed complete the comfortable look.

Most boho chic looks infuse lots of colors that are often mismatched for effect. This is a great way to have fun with collecting pillows and art – the more the better, so have at it!
