There is something about an older house that just by nature makes it homier – the wider moldings, plaster walls, and wide plank flooring with all its imperfections. While building your dream house is exciting, there is something to be said for caring for and updating an older home. This particular Myers Park residence has all the character I love in an older home.
My client wanted a sunroom facelift, and the first thing I noticed when I met with her was the amazing old casement windows. I fell in love and could not wait to start.
They wanted a casual, comfortable room for watching TV and lounging. I immediately planned a sectional in the corner for exactly that. I shopped the house and found a leather chair downstairs that needed a new home in this space. The room evolved from there with neutral shades and lots of texture. Mixing leather and shag with a brick wall and metal windows as a backdrop, I then pulled in two different light fixtures for either end of the sofa (in place of an overhead light and side lamps). I could picture myself curled up in the corner of that sofa on a chilly Sunday afternoon under that light with a good book and looking out of those beautiful large casement windows.
We painted them black, and my client beat me to the punch and used a liquid gold leaf on the hinges! I love these windows, and I imagine myself in a New York City loft watching the street below or in a large open studio working on a new masterpiece.
This room turned out just as I envisioned, evoking all sorts of daydreaming and comfort. Isn’t that what we all want when we come home?
