When Paige Roselle and her husband walked into one of the Symphony Guild’s showhouses many years ago, they fell in love with the possibilities. The gorgeous lot located in Foxcroft was not only ideally situated across the street from their children’s school, Charlotte Country Day, but the bones of the house were essential for how they wanted to live as a family. They snatched it up and have spent the past thirteen years editing it to perfection.
“The property and lot were just beautiful – full of trees,” Roselle says. “It was a short walk to Country Day with our children, and although the interiors weren’t our style at all, we loved the feel of it. I knew I wanted to design the interiors around our family.” The family waited a year to move in so they could do some basic renovations to the home. Since then, they have added a bathroom for one of their children, a home gym, and finished most of the unfinished attic space in the second story of the home. “Most recently, we added a pool house and redid our kitchen,” Roselle adds. Along the way, Roselle had been into the homes of some friends who used Aida Saul for their interior design and fell in love with the way she mixed styles, used color, and stayed true to the
homeowners’ tastes.
“I had shopped at Aida’s boutique in Charlotte, Luxe, many times for my home, so I got to know her that way, and when I saw her work in action, I was blown away,” Roselle says. “We instantly meshed.” From working with architects during more significant changes to choosing finishes, fabrics, and everything in between, Saul and Roselle have worked together on many projects in this home.
“When I landed in the house, it was very traditional,” Saul recalls. “Paige wanted to update her family’s style, taking it from more traditional to a contemporary and modern vibe.” Roselle adds, “Yes, Aida has moved through many stages of life with me, from when my budget was smaller through larger. I’ve been so blessed to have Aida create the spaces our family loves.” Roselle says that her family and then color are the greatest influences when designing. “I have to think of my family first; we live here every day. But I love color, especially blue, so I knew I had to have pops ofblue throughout the home. Those are my favorite rooms.”
Together, Saul and Roselle chose pieces that were highly functional and kid-friendly – and, of course, occasionally blue. “Paige’s tastes have evolved quite a bit,” Saul explains. “She developed a love of art, so we’ve incorporated a lot of pieces from SOCO Gallery in Charlotte throughout the home alongside some older, cherished pieces. We wanted to incorporate the new while paying homage to the old.” Saul specifically points to a gorgeous fourteen-foot Chinese screen that she deems “probably museumworthy.” Roselle used many of her heirloom antiques alongside the new and more modern style that Saul infused into every room In the den, Saul ditched the entirely traditional feel for a more colorful and contemporary aesthetic, complete with a bold blue sectional and a newly upholstered citron loveseat.
“We kept the family photos and got rid of the rest,” she says. In the kitchen, Saul did a “minor facelift,” as she puts it, reworking some cabinetry on one wall to create more storage and make it functional. They built a new island, repainted cabinets, and added a new hood.
“My mother taught me how to make a home welcoming and warm to all those who visit, and I truly try to impart this on every client’s home,” Saul says. “If you enhance how people live and make the house a reflection of them, they feel imminently happier, and having clients who can’t wait to get home is one of the best compliments there is.” When asked what her design secret is, Roselle laughs and says, “Aida is my design secret! And I am happy to share this tip with everyone.”
Saul shares some of her secrets about making this home look collected and eclectic, revealing that most of the lamps and accessories are vintage from flea markets like Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta, online at 1stdibs and Chairish, and locally at Darnell & Company and Slate Interiors. Saul designed the rug in the living room and had it custom made at Stark Carpet, and the Moroccan rugs in the den and pool house are from Charlotte Rug Gallery.
As if Roselle and Saul didn’t agree on enough, they both choose the study as one of their favorite rooms. “Blue makes me smile,” Roselle says. Saul adds, “I love the aqua lacquer we chose for the walls, and the ombre curtains bring this ethereal, almost magical feel.”
